Workshop Options

Video

Features the life of the people of Kenya. School life and the role of children. 'Living with Lions'. Narrated by a child who Rimas used to teach, this video includes clips of people and animals.

It is most appropriate for KS2 and above, but extracts can be used with KS1.

Please provide a television and video cassette player for this activity.

Slide presentation/Question & Answer session

Rimas answers questions about Kenya using a Powerpoint presentation to call up images in response to children's questions. This includes high quality photographs taken by Rimas of Maasai people, their daily activities and the wild animals from the Maasai Mara. It makes for a much more interesting session if children prepare questions in advance. Duration and content will be adapted to the needs of the school

Suitable for all age groups.

Please provide a projector screen and tape cassette player for this activity.

Beadwork

Based on traditional Maasai designs. Rimas demonstrates some of her work. The children have a chance to wear some of the jewellery and then to make their own bracelets.

Suitable for KS2 and above, maximum 30 children at a time.

Allow at least 40 minutes for this activity.

Tourism/fairtrade issues

Rimas can give talks to older children about tourism in Kenya in relation to development and the environment.

Suitable for KS3 and above

Story telling

Traditional African narratives with lessons/teaching. In Kenya these stories are normally narrated in the evening as it is impossible to narrate stories during the day when livestock may get lost.

Suitable for all age groups.
