Maxwell Ayamba is a Ghanaian story teller, musician and artist who now lives in Sheffield but still has close links with Ghana. Use the workshop options below to help plan your day with Maxwell. Workshop OptionsDrummingThe sounds and rhythms of a range of Ghanaian drums and tapes of traditional music. Duration and content will be adapted to the needs of the school. Suitable for all age groups and there is no restriction on the number of pupils who can participate. Maxwell is happy for schools to provide any musical instruments for children to use during these sessions, or upturned plastic buckets or wash bowls with no ridges on the bottom. Slide presentation/Question & Answer sessionMaxwell answers questions about Ghana using a Powerpoint presentation to call up images in response to questions. It makes for a more interesting session if children prepare questions in advance. Duration and content will be adapted to the needs of the school Suitable for all age groups. Please provide a projector screen and tape cassette player for this activity. Adinkra block printingAdinkra is a traditional block printing method which is used to produce fabrics and garments rich in symbolism as well as colour. Try creating your own fabric or wrapping paper and learn about the meaning of the symbols. Duration and content will be adapted to the needs of the school. Suitable for KS2 and above. Maxwell will bring the paint and printing blocks. Please provide suitable cotton material or thick white paper to print on, also newspaper and aprons for the children. Activities about chocolate/fairtrade issuesGhana is a major producer of cocoa beans, but Ghanaian farmers do not always get a fair price for their products. Where does the money spent on your chocolate bar go? Engage your pupils in the rights and wrongs of trade in other countries. Children may ask questions throughout. Content can be adapted to fit any age group and there is no restriction on the number of children who can participate. Equipment not essential. Story tellingNormally the final part of the workshop. Traditional West African Ananse stories. Suitable for all age groups. |
