Recommendations

“Absolutely wonderful. The staff and children enjoyed it.”

Swinton Fitzwilliam Junior School, Rotherham.

“Because Maxwell looked and dressed like familiar black people in Britain and then gradually introduced the surprises of his culture, the children and staff were gradually introduced to a different way of life. It was just right”

Swinton Fitzwilliam Junior School, Rotherham

“The quality of work and participation was of the highest standard. These are some of the most challenging pupils in the city, and his management of their needs was excellent.”

Broad Elms Special School, Sheffield.

Maxwell Ayamba is a Ghanaian story teller, musician and artist who now lives in Sheffield but still has close links with Ghana.

Use the workshop options below to help plan your day with Maxwell.

Workshop Options

Drumming

The sounds and rhythms of a range of Ghanaian drums and tapes of traditional music. Duration and content will be adapted to the needs of the school.

Suitable for all age groups and there is no restriction on the number of pupils who can participate.

Maxwell is happy for schools to provide any musical instruments for children to use during these sessions, or upturned plastic buckets or wash bowls with no ridges on the bottom.

Slide presentation/Question & Answer session

Maxwell answers questions about Ghana using a Powerpoint presentation to call up images in response to questions. It makes for a more interesting session if children prepare questions in advance. Duration and content will be adapted to the needs of the school

Suitable for all age groups.

Please provide a projector screen and tape cassette player for this activity.

Adinkra block printing

Adinkra is a traditional block printing method which is used to produce fabrics and garments rich in symbolism as well as colour. Try creating your own fabric or wrapping paper and learn about the meaning of the symbols. Duration and content will be adapted to the needs of the school.

Suitable for KS2 and above.

Maxwell will bring the paint and printing blocks. Please provide suitable cotton material or thick white paper to print on, also newspaper and aprons for the children.

Activities about chocolate/fairtrade issues

Ghana is a major producer of cocoa beans, but Ghanaian farmers do not always get a fair price for their products. Where does the money spent on your chocolate bar go? Engage your pupils in the rights and wrongs of trade in other countries. Children may ask questions throughout.

Content can be adapted to fit any age group and there is no restriction on the number of children who can participate.

Equipment not essential.

Story telling

Normally the final part of the workshop. Traditional West African Ananse stories.

Suitable for all age groups.
