World Cup Top Trumps17 June 2010 Based on the Oxfam resource from the 2006 World Cup, we have created some Top Trumps cards with a World Cup theme. The 16 cards each represent one of the countries in this year's tournament and include statistics on CO2 emissions, Life Expectancy, GDP, and the all-important FIFA ranking! A good starter activity for looking at global carbon footprints and the Millennium Development Goals. The FIFA website has a map showing the location of all the qualified teams - interesting to note how many of them are from Europe and to explore the role that money and wealth play in football. We want to acknowledge the work done at St Catherine's, Sheffield as a particular spur behind this. We have also drawn on material from CAFOD, FT Foundation, RISC, Oxfam and others. The emphasis in the learning outcomes is to help develop an educational context for Fairtrade, with the aim that children will gain understanding of interdependence, trade, rights, citizenship etc which may lead to a more informed choice about why/whether to support Fairtrade initiatives (including Fairtrade fortnight, FT School status etc). We have made active hyperlinks to the resources that relate to the learning opportunities, where these are available free on-line. Where a resource is not underlined, a hard copy would need to be obtained (from ourselves or elsewhere). With FT fortnight approaching fast, we have not had time to put in curriculum links. Our hope is that the Excel grid can be adapted as required to your own needs. (It is currently set to print out on one page of A4 [portrait setting] but might be easier to read if it is set to print on two or more [landscape], or enlarged). The plan was both to work with groups of parents and carers to increase their confidence and experience of expressing and articulating their wishes and to promote communication between teachers, early years practitioners and groups of parents and carers. Government Response to Sustainable Schools Consultation published12 December 2006 "My major concerns are the lack of respect people show to life, that people will hurt each other sometimes without even thinking and the lack of respect for the environment around us." One of these concerns is 'at the continuing presence of poverty and injustice in the world and the backdrop of war'.
