Preparing for Fairtrade Fortnight 27th February to 11th March 201227 January 2012 This year's event, held on 12th January 2012, focused on the Fairtrade Schools Award (FSA). Lee Jowett of Forge Valley School gave a well received presentation on how their school obtained the FSA. The session also highlit resources on cotton (in relation to sportswear for the Olympics 2012). Links to some of the resources used are provided here: The new Playfair Teaching Pack; The film FairTrade Cotton in Cameroon ; Oxfam's educational resource on cotton The Clothes Line. Higher resolution photographs of the process of clothes production can be found here ; Fairtrade Foundation classroom resources on cotton, including a powerpoint presentation 'From Seed to Garment' and photos. The page on cotton resources from FairTrade Wales contains the secondary lesson plans 'From seed to shop' (scroll down to find) which includes a map of the journey of a pair of jeans and figures on who get's what from the £30 pricetag. Pupils can read out the role cards for cotton pickers, factory owner etc and then vote (one finger can be 10%) to say how much each person involved in the process of clothes production should earn.) Another resource, mentioned at the workshop, which looks at conditions in clothing factories is Oxfam's Looking Behind the Logo . For quick access to the Fairtrade Fortnight 2012 Guide and the Schools Action Guide go to the FT Foundation's Support & Resources page and don't forget to register for the Fairtrade Schools e-newsletter and to work towards becoming a FT School. Visit our resource centre for further Fairtrade resources. If you are a Sheffield school, why not take part in a Fairtrade audit of your local shops? Download details here. All schools who return ten or more of these completed forms by 20th February 2012 will receive an invitation to a special Fairtrade City reception in the Lord Mayor’s Parlour during Fairtrade Fortnight. As a result of a past training event at DEC(SY), we have produced a possible plan for progression in learning outcomes and learning opportunities from KS1-4/5 around trade/Fairtrade issues. We want to acknowledge the work done at St Catherine's, Sheffield as a particular spur behind this. We have also drawn on material from CAFOD, FT Foundation, RISC, Oxfam and others. The emphasis in the learning outcomes is to help develop an educational context for Fairtrade, with the aim that children will gain understanding of interdependence, trade, rights, citizenship etc which may lead to a more informed choice about why/whether to support Fairtrade initiatives (including Fairtrade fortnight, FT School status etc). We have made active hyperlinks to the resources that relate to the learning opportunities, where these are available free on-line. Where a resource is not underlined, a hard copy would need to be obtained (from ourselves or elsewhere). Our hope is that the Excel grid can be adapted as required to your own needs. (It is currently set to print out on one page of A4 [portrait setting] but might be easier to read if it is set to print on two or more [landscape], or enlarged to A3 size).
