Ecological Footprints - Litter, Waste and Recycling

- to develop the on-going topic about litter, waste and the
environment
Length of activity: 30 minutes
Description of activity:
A slide presentation was delivered covering:
- How waste was collected and recylced from the turn of the
century, how it was disposed of and the changing nature of the rubbish
that was collected. This also looked at the historical aspects
of Sheffield
- How waste is collected today witht he introductionof wheelie
bins, how it disposed of locally in Sheffield via landfill and
incineration (and the processes that is encountered) and the problems
associated with types of rubbish that householders put inside their
bins
- Who else makes rubbish and where should it go (hospitals etc)
- How waste such as litter causes environmental problems
i.e. fly-tipping, spoils open spaces, countryside, their street etc.
- How personnel injuries can happen and how injuries can happen to
others such as pets, wildlife etc.
- The ways in which litter is removed i.e. machinery, people,
equipment etc
- How they themselves can help reduce the amounts of litter
and rubbish by actively thinking about recycling their rubbish and not
creating the rubbish in the first place i.e. waste minimising.
Questions and answers Session
Afterwards the children were invited to ask questions about what they
seen on the slides and enter into debate how they can they could
themselves look at reducing litter and rubbish.
