The Development Education Centre (South Yorkshire), DEC(SY), was established in 1984 (registered charity no. 517354). It works with teachers and others involved in education to promote a development and global perspective in the curriculum. DEC(SY) is organised by its members. These include aid and development agencies, campaign groups, community and religious organisations, educational bodies and individuals. DEC(SY) is run by an education worker, resources and advice worker, administrator, project workers and volunteers. An executive committee of volunteer members has overall responsibility for the Centre. Recent funders and supporting bodies have included Christian Aid, Oxfam, European Union, DFID, Unicef, Sheffield City Council, Trusts, local organisations, churches and individual donors. What Is Development Education?Development education aims to raise awareness and understanding of how global issues affect the everyday lives of individuals, communities and societies. It is about teaching and learning awareness of issues related to development, the environment and sustainability and to understand the personal, local, national and global significance of these issues. Development education raises questions about our role and responsibilities in an increasingly unequal world where millions of people are denied their basic rights. It is relevant to any curriculum area, age group and both to informal settings as well as to nurseries, schools, colleges and universities. |
